In September 2023, 46-year-old Sarena Crane, a beloved Tauranga mum, began experiencing troubling symptoms. What was initially thought to be IBS or endometriosis quickly led to a devastating discovery: by October 2023, Sarena was diagnosed with Stage Four bowel cancer, with tumors found in her cervix and bowel. Faced with immense challenges, Sarena was determined to fight, exploring alternative treatment options beyond New Zealand’s borders.
Her extensive search led her to a promising, intensive three-week cancer therapy program in Mexico. This vital treatment, however, comes with a substantial cost of approximately $150,000 NZD, covering the therapy itself, travel, accommodation, and living expenses for Sarena and her family during her treatment. On April 5, 2025, Fairhaven School in Te Puke hosted a truly heartwarming movie night fundraiser to help Sarena’s family ease the financial burden of her treatment. The event saw locals of all ages come together for an evening of fun and solidarity, showcasing the powerful impact a small community can have when united for a meaningful cause.
The iconic film “Space Jam” was the perfect choice for the evening’s feature, providing a nostalgic and light-hearted experience for all families in attendance. Beyond the big screen, the event offered a fantastic array of activities, ensuring there was something for everyone.
